Spring Valley business owners honored with Rochester Area Economic Development Inc., 2022 R.A.V.E. Award!

11/22/2022 by Chris Hahn

Rochester Area Economic Development Inc, (RAEDI) celebrated its 2022 R.A.V.E. (Recognizing Awarding Valuing Entrepreneurs) awards, November 16th in Rochester MN.  Among the honorees were Spring Valley entrepreneurs, Jenn and Alex Slifka, owners of Stellar 181 Taphouse, Chateau De Chic and Chic by Chateau.

The following biography, photo, and video are courtesy of Rochester Area Economic Development Inc. and used with permission.

Jenn Slifka knew exactly what she wanted to do after high school. Two days after her graduation in 2002, she started beauty school and by 2006, she owned Chateau de Chic Salon & Spa in downtown Spring Valley. At the time, Alex had his own construction business and Jenn contracted with him to remodel her salon. Soon he was getting his hair cut there regularly and by 2008, the two were married.

In 2018, they purchased the two buildings next to the salon, and added a boutique, Chic by Chateau, which carries fashionable clothing, décor, and accessories. The boutique was a great pairing with Chateau de Chic Salon & Spa. Jenn’s mom, Suzanne, opened Some Like It Hot, in the second building, and shares her years of experience in the catering business offering high quality desserts, coffees, and cakes.

In 2019, they purchased the building just north of Some Like It Hot. After remodeling it, the Slifka’s opened Stellar 181Taphousein mid 2021. Alex still runs his construction company, which does property management out of Rochester, commercial remodeling, and custom wood working. This is his passion and he brought that into play in the Stellar building with all the woodwork in there.

Between their three businesses, and Jenn’s mom’s business, they employ 38 people in Spring Valley. All four are connected via the original, late 1800’s walk-through doorways. “It really provides an inviting and unique experience,” says Chris Hahn, EDA Director for Spring Valley. “Once you enter, you can get your hair done, shop for clothes and gifts, grab a coffee and a sweet treat, or pull up a seat at the bar for a meal and local craft beer, all without walking back out the door.”

 Congratulations to Jenn and Alex!

Frozen Feet 4k run/walk more festive this year!

11/22/2022 by Chris Hahn

The Frozen Feet 4k fun run and walk during Christmas on Historic Broadway in Spring Valley will have a few new perks this year, although it will continue to have a Knights theme.

The Kingsland Youth Football group is the sponsoring organization for the event, which is in its eighth year. The group that supports youth football for Kingsland students will be handling organization of the run set for 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, just as it has for the past several years.

This year, the event will have several gifts available to participants through a drawing at the conclusion of the run/walk through a festive Spring Valley. Several local businesses have generously donated gift cards and other goodies that will be distributed through the drawing.

The Mundfrom Building, 124 North Broadway Avenue, will be the meeting place and finishing location again this year. Baked goodies and hot chocolate will be available at the end of the event.

Participants will be able to join the run for a $15 entry fee. There is also an option to contribute additional dollars to the Kingsland youth football program.

Advance registration is encouraged online at www.springvalleyeda.org. People can also donate to the group online. Paper forms are available at City Hall. Same-day registration is an option at the Mundfrom Building starting at 1 p.m.

During the event, runners will leave downtown Spring Valley, run south on Washington Avenue, head west on Sample Road, then head back north on Territorial Road before hitting the trail off of High Street, crossing the creek and continuing through the Trail of Trees and back to downtown. The route is just short of 2.5 miles. Walkers can traverse the entire route or take a shortened jaunt around and through the beautiful Trail of Trees.

The event is part of Christmas on Historic Broadway put on by the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce and Brave Community Theatre. Other events include a visit by Santa Claus and a light parade in the evening of Dec. 3.

Groundbreaking for new Penz Automotive Building

11/16/2022 by Chris Hahn

Saturday, November 5, was indeed a groundbreaking day in Spring Valley for Penz Automotive Group. Penz has owned the Spring Valley Chevrolet Buick in Spring Valley for about a year and is currently leasing the building they are using.

Groundbreaking was held at a new location at 1100 N. Broadway Street on the northside of Spring Valley just off of Highway 63, for the brand new state of the art facility. Completion of the project is anticipated in the spring or summer of 2023. Penz Automotive Group wanted to invest in the community and provide an 18,000-square-foot, modern building with a completely up-to-date service area.

The new location will offer all the same services as are offered at the current location. New and used vehicles will be offered for sale and service will be available for all types of vehicles. The shop department will have accessories and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) products for sale.

Halloween sweets ‘n’ treats for kiddos in Wykoff, Spring Valley

11/01/2022 by Chris Hahn

Original article published in the Mower County Independent, Thursday, October 27, 2022.   Reprinted with permission and gratitude.

By Gretchen Mensink Lovejoy

From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go BUMP! in the night, good Lord deliver us!

BUT…

For little ones, tall ones, drooly ones, squawky ones, shy ones and loud ones, it’s TIME. The WAIT is OVER. From door to door they travel, seeking a treat plopped neatly into their bag or bucket. The moon may be high and small in the sky like a pearl, or it may be low and big-bellied, but the mission tonight and the next night of festivities are clear: GET. CANDY.

That’s why Kingsland Community Education, the Spring Valley Kiwanis Club and the Wykoff Fire Department have all chosen to don costumes and welcome children to their respective Halloween parties, where they’ll gather a little fright here, a little sweet morsel there, and Friday and Monday nights are happier occasions than all the nights before because there are PARTIES.

First, Kingsland Community Education and Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) will host its annual Halloween party at the Wykoff Community Hall on Friday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., after which Monday’s the evening of even more events as the Wykoff Fire Department welcomes costumed kiddos to the fire hall to choose a candy or two and become acquainted with the town’s firefighters and their vehicles and gear.

“The Wykoff Fire Department will be handing out treats to the kiddos on Halloween at the fire station. Come to the fire station and meet and thank the firefighters who help protect us. They may even let you sit in the big fire truck,” shared an announcement on the Wykoff city newsletter that invites trick-or-treaters to stop in at the North Gold Street station on the 31st between 4 and 7 p.m.

Seven miles to the west, there’s another place for the little ones, big ones, tall ones, drooly ones, squawky ones and loud ones and their parents and guardians on Halloween night as the Spring Valley Kiwanis Club and the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce co-host the organizations’ yearly Halloween party and haunted house. Kiwanian Jay Webster outlined what’s planned for the evening, stating, “The party is October 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Spring Valley Community Center, and the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce helps sponsor. It is an enjoyable event for the kids and provides Halloween fun. It is part of the Kiwanis mission in ‘Serving the Children of the World,’ and we have help from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the VFW Auxiliary and the Kingsland Drama Club and Kingsland Key Club. The party is for ages 1 through 12 years old, and the kids will enjoy playing games, winning prizes, and receiving a treat bag. A treat bag will be given to each child for attending the Halloween party.”

Webster elaborated, “Plus, those daring enough have an opportunity to tour the Kingsland Drama Club and Kingsland Key Club haunted house. The haunted house is from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Spring Valley Community Center, too. At the party, we enjoy the amazingly creative costumes and kids having fun, and we enjoy planning it for them. The Halloween party is a place to enjoy the wonderful costumes and a place for kids to participate in the various games and tour the haunted house…a safe place for kids to have fun, receive a treat bag, stay warm and be entertained on Halloween night. We hope to see everyone there.”
